Grow-It-Yourself

Our Grow-It-Yourself Kit gives you the opportunity to experiment with our materials and create your own product! Think of pots, sculptures, lamps and so much more.

You can make eco-friendly products at home or school, or during a workshop. Besides the mycelium composite material, we provide you with instructions to guide you through the process.

Be creative and start exploring a potentially new world with mycelium.

Have fun! Also, feel free to share your photos and tag #grownbio on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

A Short Guide

Start by cleaning all the tools and surfaces with ethanol. You can then follow the GIY bag instructions, or simply download or read them below:

Tools needed:

  • Ethanol
  • Foil
  • Scissors
  • Gloves
  • Flour
  • Sculpting mix (optional)

1. Prepare the material

a. Using gloves: Add material to sterile bowl and add flour (30g per kg)

b. Add sculpting mix if you want to shape it in a specific way (optional)

c. Breakup material with your hands and thoroughly mix in the flour. Make sure you crumble all lumps

2. Fill the molds

a. Take mold you want to grow your mycelium in

b. Desinfect

c. Add substrate, push a bit in the corners

3. Cover

a. Once filled, cover the mold with a plastic thin foil

b. Make small holes every 3cm, this allows the mycelium to breathe

4. Growing phase in the mold

a. Grow between 3- 5 days at 21° – 24° C

b. When it looks all white, take it out of the mold

c. Take it out gently

5. Dry the product

For products with a thickness > 2,5 cm:
Place the product in the oven at +/- 40° C with the door a bit open so the moisture can escape for 3-4 hours. – Bake off at 80°C for 2 hours

For products with a thickness < 2,5 cm:
Place the product in the oven at 80° C for 2-3 hours

How do you know if your product has dried enough?

The best test is to measure the weight before and after. Mycelium substrate contains approximately 60% moisture, so the product should lose 50-60% of its initial weight.

I received my substrate, how should I store it?

Mycelium grows in ambient temperatures. Before using the substrate, you want to slow down the growing process. Place the substrate in the refrigerator (1°C – 7°C) and best use it within five days. Don’t place your substrate in the freezer.
